What is a music cue sheet and when and why would I need one?

What is a cue sheet?

All broadcasters are required to pay fees to certain PROs (performance rights organizations) (ASCAP, BMI, etc.) every time they broadcast music. A cue sheet is what the broadcaster uses to track the music they use in order to pay these fees. Some of the music tracks on RevoStock are registered with Performing Rights Organizations. You can know which tracks are registered as they are marked with a P on the Search Results pages and also, whether or not they are registered with a PRO is noted on the product information page.

I thought this music was royalty-free. Why do I need to submit a cue sheet?

You only have to submit a cue sheet if the music file is registered with a PRO. Many tracks on RevoStock are not registered with a PRO.

You only have to submit a cue sheet to the broadcasting company that will be broadcasting your media project. Most likely, they will request a cue sheet anyway. When you submit a cue sheet, the broadcaster is responsible for paying the fees, not you. In fact, they have to pay the fees whether or not you let them know who created the music you used in your project.

By submitting a cue sheet, you allow the original creator of the music (our RevoStock producers) to receive their rightful portion of these fees the broadcaster has to pay. If you don't submit a cue sheet, your broadcaster will still pay the fees, however, the music's creator/composer won't ever see any of it.

When do I need to submit a cue sheet?

Only when the music you purchase will be used in a project that you will be submitting to a broadcaster for broadcast. If your project will not be broadcast (i.e. via television or radio) then you don't need to worry about cue sheets.

Where do I get one and what do I do with it?

When you purchase music from RevoStock, a pre-filled out cue sheet will be created for you and available on the My Downloads page where you will download the files you purchase. All you have to do is print it out, fill in any supplemental info. concerning your project and submit this to the broadcaster (TV or Radio station.)

How much more am I going to have to pay?

You will not have to pay anything more when submitting your music or a cue sheet to a Broadcaster who already pays fees to performing rights organizations.

Do I have to do this?

Yes - it is actually a legal requirement. (Only if the music you are using will be submitted to a broadcaster for broadcast.)
